A New Year, a new you!

Happy New Year!

Research shows that over 90% of new year’s resolutions will be abandoned within the first 3 months of the incoming year. See this article:

Oh dear oh dear. But what can we do? Perhaps what we need is not to make lofty resolutions,…….. but rather just to take some steps. Not to simply start change something new, but perhaps to reclaim something we already have..

Instead of a resolution with limited conviction, maybe my new book, Dance for Life, can inspire you to start something that truly engages you; mind, body and soul?, That way you can keep your intention in play for the whole of 2025, and beyond. The activity in question, my friends, is DANCE! It’s a birthright that you can reclaim any time or at any age.

Why am I am inviting you to dance?

I am a therapist and conscious dance leader. As well as seeing clients for one-to-one and couples therapy, I run dance events for everyone, of all ages, backgrounds and places, from the shyest or least experienced mover, to those who already come regularly and, like myself, consider the dance floor to be their natural home for exercise, community, connection, self-expression, and creativity. Feeling curious and inspired? Please Read On……

Flagship Flomotion, Archway

For the last 5 years, I have been running a regular weekend dance session, Flomotion. Dance. It’s a no booze, no drugs, no talking, strictly dance affair. It, and currently takes place place in a church hall in Archway (North London) on a Saturday evening beginning at 6.15pm and ends at 8.30pm.

If you think of a cross between a yoga class and a disco, with a friendly crowd that just want to move together, you’re in the right zone.

I play upbeat music and facilitate the space to really invite yourself into an embodied presence through attention to breath and sensations of the body. And then we dance! The playlist is unique to each Flomotion session and contains a mix of house music, Latin, Jazz, Soul, Reggae, African beats and more.

There’s also an opportunity to experience relaxation and a guided meditation at the end.

What’s New in ’25?

Flomotion.dance is now also taking place on Monday afternoons each month at The Dragon Café run by the Mental Fight Club (MFC) in Elephant and Castle, South London.  The sessions are free to all and are part of MFC’s programme to offer arts events to support people of all mental experience.

MFC is a ‘vanguard’ organisation which has stimulated the debate about the way arts and mental health intersect and impact one another. It is a privilege to work with this community group and this creative organisation, where emotional and mental turmoil do not define who a person is, where we are not seeking fixes. We are simply coming together to dance and thereby create community.

All welcome:

What else is happening on the dance floor?

Flomotion has a second home in Crouch End, North London. I moved to this wonderful, vibrant area in 2024, and my dancing feet found another venue at Life By Margot’s, a wellbeing centre in Park Road, London N8.

The new monthly Sunday morning session, Sun-dance, will run from 9.45am to 11.30am. As well as welcoming dancers to this North London venue, there will be an online option to join the dance so that you can joincome wherever you are in the world!

Sun-dance will follow the Open Floor movement cycle and each month we will explore an aspect of embodiment such as Centre, Ground, or Release through our moving bodies. There will be time to let your hair down through wild dance, and also space for reflection and relaxation, always listening to, and following the needs of, your body as we go through the session.

Is there more?

Er, yes actually. Following my appearance on Andrew Cuerden’s Soulhubber’s Podcast where he kindly invited me a long to discuss the topic of ‘Why Dance?,

I am appearing on a podcast with John Wilson at Onlineevents.co.uk,

an online platform offering ‘Live and on-demand Learning’ opportunities for therapists, coaches and anyone interested in the field of personal development.

So let me invite you to take that step, and find a path that will last at least a whole year.  Come and join in with the friendly beats. Reclaim your love of life through the magic of dance.

Take care and all best wishes for 2025,

Julia
